My role as Design Director was multifaceted. I managed designers and design leads, hired, performed 1on1’s and helped define the strategic direction of the product and the UX team. A big part of my impact was whiteboarding with feature designers to help them figure out the right solution to focus on, I also spent a lot of time experimenting with new ideas and working on conceptual pieces that would help push the limits of what Shopify could be.
The part of my time I’m most proud of is hard to display in a visual portfolio – it’s the team I helped build and is still producing one of the highest quality products on the internet. We pulled experts from around the globe as well as grew local talent from juniors to seniors right into leadership roles.
I maintained a well balanced role over my career at Shopify, and learned immeasurable skills from people leadership, to team building, to visual design, and systems building. The UX team grew from roughly 10 people when I started to nearly 150 when I left. The challenges and excitement of the product and team were truly wonderful.
